Algorithm to identify patients at low risk

for penicillin/beta-lactam allergy

 
 

Patient needing penicillin desensitization STAT, as advised by an Infectious diseases specialist

This patient needs a penicillin antibiotic within the next few hours. They MUST have had an ID consult, that clearly indicated penicillin antibiotics were the only choice of antibiotics. The patient requires antibiotic desensitization (which will temporarily allow them to tolerate this medication in an emergency setting).

Call the on call allergist in your community through hospital paging. Have all of the information available you used to complete this algorithm.

Vancouver Island

Call Victoria General hospital paging at 250-727 4212. Tell them this is for a patient that needs urgent penicillin desensitization.

Please note, that our community’s pediatric allergists are not on call, this service is offered on an ‘as available’ basis, for the extremely rare circumstances this might be required.

  • If it is the 1st-15th First page Dr. Cameron, then if no answer after 30 minutes page Dr. Cook.

  • If from the 16th-31st of the month, First page Dr. Cook, then if no answer after 30 minutes page Dr. Cameron
